The Dalai Lama has apologized after a video of him kissing a child and asking him to “suck my tongue” at an event in northern India goes viral on Twitter.

The spiritual leader‘s office apologised in a statement on Monday, 10 April, and said he “wishes to apologize to the boy and his family” after social media users labelled him a paedophile for kissing the boy on the lips and asking him to “suck his tongue”.
“His holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” adding he “regrets” the incident.
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,” the statement said.
BBC reports that the incident took place at his temple in Dharamshala on 28 February.
In the viral video, the young boy is seen approaching the spiritual leader before asking, “Can I hug you?”
The 87-year-old then invites the boy on stage, points to his cheek, and says: “First here,” prompting the boy to hug and kiss him.
He then points to his lips: “Then I think finally here also.” He’s seen pulling the boy’s chin and kissing him on his mouth.
“And suck my tongue,” he adds a few seconds later before poking his tongue out.
It is unclear who the boy is at this stage as he was at an event with the M3M Foundation.
