Oscar Pistorius and his brother Carl have been slammed over their words and actions during Women’s Month. They’ve also been branded “insensitive” in light of Oscar’s girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp’s 40th birthday celebrations.

A decade ago, Oscar shot and killed Reeva, his girlfriend of three months at the time. Despite being handed a lengthy murder sentence, the former Paralympian has taken his bid for parole to the Constitutional Court.

Meanwhile, Oscar’s brother Carl has claimed that Reeva’s death was merely an “honest, tragic mistake.”

GBV ACTIVISTS, PUBLIC SLAM OSCAR PISTORIUS AND BROTHER

Earlier this week, it was announced that Oscar Pistorius had filed papers with the Constitutional Court to question why his parole process was revoked in March 2023. He’s also claimed that his bid was “unfairly” overlooked and that his “fundamental rights” were “infringed.”

Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on 14 February 2013. He maintains that he mistook her for an intruder at his Pretoria mansion. However, during his publicised trial, Pistorius was portrayed as a jealous, verbally abusive, and trigger-happy boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Oscar’s brother Carl told The South African this week that Reeva’s death was a “tragic, honest mistake.”

But many South Africans are unhappy with the latest developments.

Gender-based violence activists Women For Change slammed Oscar’s quest for an early release.

The organisation said in a statement: “We are still standing with June and Barry Steenkamp [Reeva’s parents], and we oppose the parole application of Oscar Pistorius, as he has failed to admit his guilt or show any remorse for the murder of Reeva. In order to advance change in our society, we need to hold perpetrators accountable.”

“The audacity,” founder Sabrina Walters told The South African on Carl’s defence of his brother.

She added: “While the country celebrates Women’s Month, the reality is that South African women and children are subject to an ongoing scourge of rape, violence, and murder.

“The release of the Q1/2023/24 crime statistics has proven it once again. The violence against women and children has increased again.

“While women live in fear, adjust their behaviour and movement, and have their rights violated daily, convicted murderers and rapists are released back into society.”

‘DISRESPECTFUL DURING WOMEN’S MONTH’

Meanwhile, the public has slammed Oscar and Car Pistorius’s words and actions during Women’s Month. August also marks what would have been Reeva Steenkamp’s 40th birthday.

Meanwhile, radio and TV personality Sizwe Dhlomo tweeted about Oscar Pistorius: “They [prison] must keep him there.”
