Former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba shined light on mental health in his tribute to rapper Riky Rick via a tweet on 23 February.


Former minister of home affairs Malusi Gigaba paid tribute to Riky Rick with a touching post. Gigaba spoke about how there were signs and warnings that we should have listened more intently to, so his death could have been avoided.

“RIP Makhado! We should’ve read the signs and listened more intently to your warnings. This day could’ve been avoided,” he wrote. 

“May God bless you family and may the high heavens receive your beautiful soul graciously and grant you eternal rest!” he continued.

The family of Riky Rick confirmed his death on 23 February. The Boss Zonke hitmaker’s death was rumoured to have been a suicide but the family have not confirmed this. 

“Son, husband, father, brother and uncle, Riky ‘Ricky’ Makhado (34) sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning (23rd February) in Johannesburg,” read the statement by the family.

“Affectionately known as Riky Rick across the globe, he was deeply loved by his family, friends and the entire entertainment industry. His love for family, friends, and community is well known. Riky’s nurturing and development of young musical talent is well documented and will forever be remembered,” the statement continued.

Riky Rick was said to have been found hanging and he was then rushed to hospital but it was too late. So, the rapper passed away on the way to hospital.

“Riky spoke about his depression and he was doing okay. He stopped taking drugs many years ago and that was never a secret. I don’t know what might have triggered this. But we will pray for Bianca and the kids,” said a close friend of the rapper to Sunday World.
