For the second time this week, the Democratic Alliance – DA – courted controversy with a poster shared on their social media accounts. And this time, it involved King Charles’s coronation and South African singer Pretty Yende.

Earlier this week, the opposition poked fun at Patriotic Alliance’s Kenny Kunene, a former convict-turned-flashy businessman.

With King Charles’s coronation taking place on Saturday, 6 May, the DA heaped praise on one of the royal event’s entertainers: SA’s Pretty Yende.

Sharing a picture of Yende, the DA tweeted: “All the best to South African soprano, Pretty Yende, who will be singing at the coronation of King Charles III.

It added: “You make South Africa proud!”

Others brought up the history of the world’s largest diamond – the Cullinan – that was discovered in SA and gifted to King Edward VII in 1907. Over the years, South Africans have called on the British monarchy to return the diamond, but to no avail.

Under the DA’s post, many tweeps also attacked Pretty Yende herself.

Here’s what they had to say:

@lulushezi: “Which South Africa?”

@iAmJayTaurus: “Is the DA proud of our own African royals?”

@SaGcwensa: “Singing for her oppressor.”

@Mdumela12: “Was there any British singer during the coronation of King Misuzulu? We don’t care about that coronation. It means nothing to us.”

@Letsoalo2063: “I am not proud. Singing praise to my erstwhile oppressor and colonisers doesn’t invoke feelings of pride but disgust.”
