The late South African actor, singer, and film producer Joe Mafela died at 74 years old on 18 March 2017 after he was involved in a car accident. He will forever be remembered for his popular roles playing Sdumo in Sgudi Snaysi, and the character of Sol in Madam and Eve, and more. Read about his cause of death, career history, and more here…


Joe Mafela was born in Sibasa, Limpopo, South Africa in 1942. He started acting in 1964 and had an impressive career in the film and entertainment industry, SowetanLIVE reported. In 2017, he was reported to have been involved in a car accident involving his Ford Figo and a Bakkie around 22:00 p.m. while driving home from Soweto on the M1 North between the Oxford and Houghton Road off-ramps in Johannesburg.

Before his death, the legendary South African actor made a name for himself after he started on several TV productions including Stokvel, Going Up playing Jabulani Cebekhulu, Retribution where he played the character of a man named Khumbulani Maphosa, Game of Vultures where he played Jacob Mtoko, Mercenary Fighters, Uphondo no Nkinsela, Escape from Angola, Real News, and more, IMDb reported.

Joe Mafela was married to Andronica, affectionately referred to by many South Africans as Mam’Andy whom he had three children with, Briefly reported. Despite his fame, Mafela maintained a low profile and stayed away from the spotlight unless he was in front of the camera.

His son Juju is reported to have seemingly walked in his father’s footsteps as he took over the management of Penguin Films as a director after his father died. The seasoned actor is said to have also left behind six grandchildren.
