Despite their bitter split close to a decade ago, the family of Derick Hougaard’s ex-wife Karlien van Jaarsveld are “relieved” at news his health condition is improving.
The former Springboks player – who has been in a coma for two weeks in the ICU of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital ICU – recently opened his eyes and responded to his loved ones.
On Saturday, 10 June, the retired rugby star was found unresponsive by his girlfriend Nadine. The Afrikaans singer has been sharing updates about Derick on her Facebook page.
KARLIEN VAN JAARSVELD’S MOM SPEAKS ON DERICK HOUGAARD
Speaking to Netwerk24, Karlien van Jaarsveld’s mother, Ronel Brink, reacted to the news that Derick Hougaard had turned a corner.
“We are sincerely grateful and relieved that Derick is showing signs of improvement. We believe and trust that he will full recover”, his former mother-in-law said.
Karlien herself has been keeping a low profile after deactivating her Facebook account and going radio silent on her Instagram platform.
Her last post on her IG was one in which she dedicated a song she wrote for Derick, known as the “Liefling van Loftus.” The lyrics featured the words in Afrikaans: “Getting used to people taking sides. But you will always be His darling.”
“One of the more difficult days,” she told her followers.
In an Instagram Story last weekend, Karlien revealed that she had found out the news of Derick’s health woes along with the public.
Karlien also responded to comments from followers who wished her well. She said: “I always believe in the truth that prevails even though it is many years later… No one knows our path.”
Speaking to Rapport, Karlien added: “My focus is on assisting the twins through this difficult time. We are praying for his recovery”.
BITTER SPLIT FOR FORMER GOLDEN COUPLE
Derick and Karlien – who were married from 2013 to 2015 – share twin boys, Eliah and Daniel.
However, the exes split into bitter terms after making headlines over their public spats, particularly over their children.
In 2018, Derick made headlines when his ex-wife claimed their twin boys had gone “missing” while in his custody. She also claimed that Derick was “drunk” during a day out with their kids.
However, the incident turned out to be a misunderstanding, and the children were found safely found in Derick’s care.
In a Facebook post shortly after, Karlien defended her decision to speak out on Derick.
She wrote: “Derick may only supervise the children according to the court order because of his pill and alcohol addiction, and because of the life of my children and my children, he has been at risk several times.
“He has been in and out of rehabilitation centers several times. I was terrified of concern because I feared for the safety of my children” at the stadium.”
Karlien added that Derick had also not paid child support, and she had been financing her children.
