Fans of Cristiano Ronaldo have been left bewildered by reports accusing him of committing adultery in Iran – a crime punishable by 99 lashings to the body.

The world’s most followed person on Instagram was accused of showing affection to a woman who was not his partner Georgina Rodriguez. The strict Islamic country reportedly frowns upon any romantic relations outside marriage.

But it seems the issue may have been blown way out of proportion.

CRISTIANO RONALDO COMMITS ADULTERY?

According to Iranian media, Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of committing adultery last month. This, after he showed affection to a woman who gifted him a portrait she had made for him.

The father-of-five – who is engaged to model Georgina Rodriguez – visited Iran with his team Al-Nassr. The Saudi squad played against Persepolis in the Asian Champions League group stage.

Upon his arrival, the handsome soccer star was gifted with two portraits by an artist named Fatima Hamimi.

The elderly woman paints using her feet as she is 85% paralysed and uses a wheelchair for mobility.

Touched by the gesture, Cristiano hugged the woman and kissed her on the cheek, a move which locals reportedly found offensive, reports Geo TV.

A clip of their meeting was shared on the official Twitter account of Al-Nassr, the Saudi club Cristiano plays for.

According to the publication, Iran considers any form of affection between adults who are unmarried as a form of adultery, a crime that is punishable with 99 public lashings.

IRANIAN EMBASSY RUBBISHES REPORT

But while the rumours that Cristiano Ronaldo is in hot water with the government, Iranian officials have rubbished the “fake news” reports.

According to Metro, a statement from the Iranian embassy in Spain read: ‘We strongly deny the issuance of any court ruling against any international athlete in Iran.

“It is a matter of concern that publications of such unfounded news could overshadow crimes against humanity and war crimes against the oppressed Palestinian nation.

“It should be noted that Cristiano Ronaldo travelled to Iran in September to play in an official football match. He was very well received by the people and the authorities.

“His sincere and humane meeting with Fatemeh Hamami was also praised and admired by both the people and the country’s sports authorities.”

Cristiano has not yet commented on the allegations.
