South Africans are congratulating Mthatha-born artist Themba Mkhangeli for designing the country’s latest R2 coin.

The award-winning visual artist Themba Mkhangeli, who designed the new R2 coin reportedly took three months to craft the perfect design for the South African Reserve Bank.

Mthatha-born artist, who’s etched his name into South African history books as the designer of the new R2 coin also tells the publication that he ensured his work is ‘different and lovable’
The Reserve Bank reports that the springbok, featured on the R2 coin and designed by the award-winning visual artist and environmentalist is the national animal of South Africa.
A feature unique to the springbok is its ability to perform multiple leaps into the air of up to 2 meters above the ground.
