‘IT’S NOT SAMOOSAS’

Martin De Lange, who is the managing director of the Midrand-based restaurant Golden Snacks and the supplier of the “golden pockets” tells IOL that golden pockets are not samoosas.

“Golden pockets are delicious savoury pockets from local ready-to-eat supplier, Golden Snacks. It is made with vetkoek pastry and not samoosa pastry, and the reason for its familiar triangular shape is because it is simply a genius way to fold a pastry to hold a filling,” said De Lange.

De Lange adds that golden pockets can be filled with traditional flavours, and the magic of the golden pocket is that it boasts a variety of unique flavours, such as boerewors, spare rib, ham and cheese, and BBQ chicken.

The Eat Down reveals that samoosas differ in more than just name, as one ususally finds the fillings in South Africa tend to be slightly different than the Indian versions.

Popular samoosas are usually filled with curried beef mince, cheese and onion and prawn and corn, biltong and feta.

SOUTH AFRICANS: ‘GOLDEN POCKETS ARE THE WORST’

Lauren Segal Cooper: “No, no, no its sacrilege! And since when does a samoosa have ham and cheese in it? I guess that’s why they changed the name.”

Amesha Bachan: “I was wondering the same thing… but then again, anyone that fries a samoosa like that, is not worthy of calling it a samoosa.”

Darwies Soeker: “Since they decided to gooi ham n cheese into the mix. Imagine the uproar if a ham n cheese samoosa surfaced in Cape Town.”

Renée Leeuwner: “Golden Pockets are the worst. I love samoosas, but have never had a good experience with a golden pocket.”

Ziaan Siems: “I think it’s supposed to be bigger samoosas. Big, missed opportunity to call them “moersa samoosa”.

Rodney Errens: “It’s the Chinese I tell you. They rebrand many products and call it something else.”
