South Africans react to R250 000 spent to rename William Nicol Drive
The City of Johannesburg says it had spent about R250 000 on the renaming of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive.

The City of Johannesburg on Tuesday, 26 September held a renaming ceremony to officially rename the popular road in Sandton from William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive.

EWN reports that Johannesburg City Manager Floyd Brink confirmed that the motion to rename William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela was passed in council back in 2018, and the municipality had spent nearly R250 000 so far.
The money was spent on the advertising of the new name change, the public participation process and the erection of the new street signs.
The African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Johannesburg revealed that it was important for social cohesion that monuments named after apartheid collaborators were renamed.
While Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, who is the Johannesburg caucus leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) revealed that taxpayers’ money would be better spent on fixing roads and potholes rather than renaming them.
The publication adds that Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda revealed that the renaming of streets doesn’t mean the city is neglecting its duty of service delivery.
