South Africa has produced some of the most famous celebrities. Whether it is in sport, technology or literature, there’s some successful South African-born people out there.

1. Steve Nash, for those who don’t know is a famous basketball star who grew up in Canada but was actually born in Johannesburg. He was an eight-time NBA All-Star and is regarded as one of the best point guards ever.

2. Famous writer, J.R.R Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in the Free State. He identified primarily as a British writer, but the first years of his life was spent in South Africa. He’s best-known for his fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His father’s grave can still be found in Bloemfontein’s cemetery.


3. Jonathan Liebesman is a famous film director and is mostly known for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Darkness Falls, Wrath of the Titans and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. He was born born in Johannesburg and reportedly studied film in South Africa until the mid 1990’s. He mentioned he’s proudly South African on Twitter as well. How neat!

4. Elon Musk is a business magnate, investor and engineer and mostly known for his role in the technology startup world. Musk is the co-founder or founder of high-tech companies like, PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla Motors. He was born in Pretoria in 1971 and moved away just before his 18th birthday. He has three nationalities: Canadian, American, and South African.

5. David John Matthews, or rather Dave Matthews, lead vocalist of the the Dave Matthews Band, was born in South Africa in 1967. He is a singer-songwriter, musician, actor and guitarist. When he was about two years old he and his family made the move to the States.
