The gift of the givers team headed to the north of Pretoria in Hammanskraal to deliver bottled water to the community. Hammanskraal has been gripped by a cholera outbreak for the past few days. On Monday, the team went to the Jubilee District Hospital, which was treating patients amid the outbreak.

The team delivered approximately 8 600 litres of water in five and ten bottles. The founder of the organisation Imtiaz Sooliman said “at this moment, the Gift of the Givers team is busy loading their trucks with necessities to Jubilee Hospital. The team will be on board again, delivering to neighbouring clinics.

On Sunday, the Gauteng Department of health announced a cholera outbreak. This came as a result of lab tests of 19 people who went to the hospital showed symptoms of diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea. The outbreak has claimed 15 lives in Hammanskraal alone while there have been a few positive cases in the Free State and one case in Limpopo.

Cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal

The outbreak has claimed 15 lives and left many sick an in hospitals. With Hammanskraal being the hardest hit, the sickness seems to be spreading through leaving thousands of people at risk. The sickness has exposed the dysfunctional sewerage system. About 37 Residents from the area have been hospitalised as a result of the outbreak.

The Department of Water and Sanitation announced on Monday that it would investigate the cause of the outbreak and the issues of water in Hammanskral. It is to be noted that issues of water in the area are not new, residents of Hammanskraal have in the past raised the issue of water scarcity. The city of Tshwane appealed to residents not to drink tap water until the cause of the outbreak is established.  Minister Sbongiseni Dhlomo confirmed that 41 cases of cholera countrywide.

A water expert from the University of Free State said the cause of the cholera outbreak is not hard to pinpoint. “it’s the 5-bilion litres of untreaded or partially treaded sewerage we allow to go to our rivers every day. It’s a great pity human beings have to die”. Said Anthony Turton.
