Suspect linked to airport robberies nabbed in Houghton

The suspect who is allegedly a member of a gang linked to airport robberies was arrested and detained at Hillbrow SAPS.

A 31-year-old male suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit in possession of the robbed property and an unlicensed firearm in Houghton.

MALE SUSPECT CAUGHT ON THE RUN WITH STOLEN PROPERTY

On Saturday, 08 April 2023, whilst on patrol in the Johannesburg CBD officers received a complaint about a vehicle (white BMW) involved in an armed robbery in Bryanston, which was travelling in Yeoville.

WHAT WAS STOLEN FROM THE AIRPORT CRIME

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the officers spotted and intercepted the vehicle at Houghton Drive and St Patrick Road, Houghton being driven by a male.

“Upon searching the driver and the vehicle, the officers recovered an unlicensed firearm in his possession. The robbed property which included, an iPad, an iPhone, a laptop, four luggage bags and clothing was recovered in the vehicle,” said Fihla.

He added that the robbed property was later identified by the owner who was summoned to the scene and confirmed that he and his family were robbed at gunpoint on his way home from the airport.

“The suspect who is allegedly a member of a gang linked with airport robberies was arrested and detained at Hillbrow SAPS.”

He further said the vehicle used in the commission of the crime was seized and booked at the SAPS Aeroton pound.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
