Critically acclaimed director Zack Snyder’s “Snyder Cut” of the 2017 American superhero film Justice League finally has a global release date. The film will be released on 18 March — the same day as its launch on streaming site HBO Max in the United States (US).

The date was confirmed by Warner Bros via a post on the official @SnyderCut Twitter page.

‘Jack Snyder’s Justice League’: SA release date not set

The announcement did not include any specifics about how audiences could access the long-awaited film. The studio has been working for a while now on a distribution plan for countries where HBO Max isn’t available.

Interestingly, Snyder himself has been critical of the studio’s handling of the film’s international distribution. He described it as “not amazing” in a recent interview on the SnyderCutBR YouTube channel.

While HBO Europe and HBO Asia users can access the four one-hour-instalment showcase via HBO Go and Video On Demand options, there is currently no information about a South African release date.

The release of Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League has been the most talked-about event in the world of superhero movies. The director stepped away from the original project in March 2017 after tragedy struck his family, leaving Joss Whedon to take the reins instead.

But a lot of fans found Whedon’s film disappointing and the social media campaign to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut was created. When Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Ben Affleck (Batman) tweeted their support for the cause, Warner Bros gave Snyder the green light to share his original vision with the world.

New ‘Justice League’ will be darker

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is said to have a much darker tone than the 2017 film and features a screenplay by Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio. It will also include new footage, new visual effects and new music.

After the death of Superman, the story follows Bruce Wayne as he enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman find and recruit a team of heroes (Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash) to protect the world from Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons – who seek the three Mother Boxes.

The movie stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Along with the original cast, Jared Leto is back as Joker and Joe Manganiello is returning as Deathstroke.
