‘I am a self-taught entertainer’: Lawrence Maleka on acting and presenting

Actor and TV host -Lawrence Maleka who plays the role of Zolani Dlamini in ‘The River’ says he never got any training.

Award-winning actor and TV presenter – Lawrence Maleka who hosts Big Brother Mzansi and is famous for playing the role of Zolani Dlamini in The River recently revealed that he’s a self-taught entertainer.   

Maleka has temporarily taken a break from the award-winning telenovela to host the upcoming reality show.

LAWRENCE MALEKA IN ‘BIG BROTHER MZANSI’  

The actor and TV personality is getting ready to present season three of Big Brother Mzansi after his temporary break from The River.  

He got his break in TV when he presented Soweto TV’s The Gadget Show, then replaced Bonang Matheba as host of Clash of the Choirs SA and also co-presented Club 808 with Boity Thulo in 2016 on e.tv.  

The TV personality told Drum Magazine that he now feels that now is the right time to come back to TV hosting since leaving the 1Magic telenovela.  

“I have always been a fan of our industry, in whatever shape or form.”

“When I started in the industry, I was just taken aback by this machine and the number of really talented people.”

“I have been a fan of the SAMA’s, I have been a fan of Big Brother, and having been involved.”

When he was asked what excites him about Big Brother, the actor states:

“You can always predict the outcome.”

“But the process of people coming in with one common goal to make the best television ever, that’s what I am in love with.”

“When the opportunity came I jumped at it.”

PLAYING ZOLANI IN ‘THE RIVER’  

Viewers of 1Magic’s telenovela – The River were devastated when his character Zolani left the show after Andile’s wedding.   

He was known for causing chaos alongside his aunt Lindiwe Dikana played by Sindi Dlathu.   

If they weren’t doing illegal things they were living through messy relationships.   

Zolani is serving time for killing his wife’s (Emma played by …) rapist – Zithulele Duze played by Mkhaola Ndebele.  

The actor tells the publication that the recipe to his success is to have the same level of respect, consistency, and performance to all his shows.  

“I am always trying to learn at every point so when I get an opportunity to work with some of the best people in the industry or people that I admire.”

“I’m always going to jump on it for that’s what makes every show that I have been on in my perspective successful.”  

He is a self-taught entertainer who bagged a Golden Horn Award for Best Supporting Actor in The River and scored himself several nominations and a loyal fan base throughout the years.
