It might surprise you to know that this list of celebrities and stars making it big in Hollywood contains people who were actually born in South Africa.

We all know about Charlize Theron and Trevor Noah but do we know all the other South African-born celebs living it up in Hollywood?

Pearl Thusi, for example, is making it on the Hollywood scene, and there is more to come.

Like Thusi, Theron and Noah, there are other silver screen stars whom you might not have even known were born in South Africa. Here are a few.

1. Sasha Pieterse

With that surname, it’s hard to miss that the Pretty Little Liars actress was actually born in South Africa.

Born in Johannesburg, Pieterse moved to Las Vegas when she was just five years old.

She quickly became accustomed to the entertainment industry, as her parents were both in an acrobatics team which performed internationally.

2. Tammin Sursok

Can you tell we are fans of Pretty Little Liars? This star, like Pieterse, was born in Johannesburg and grew up in an entertainment family. She has a classically trained pianist and guitarist as a mother.

When Sursok was only four years old, her family emigrated to Australia, where she later studied speech and drama.

3. Lesley- Anne Brandt

The South African recently interviewed the well-known Lucifer actress, which might have given the game away.

Brandt was born in Cape Town in 1981 and later emigrated with her family to New Zealand, where she first started her acting career. Since then she also has moved to the US to further her drama dreams.

4. Troye Sivan

This one might be very obvious or very surprising. It all depends if you can still see the 15-year-old Spud actor.

We know, we’ve opened your eyes and now you are surprised. To the ones who already knew this, sorry, you may skip this one.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter (and YouTuber) was born in Johannesburg. His parents moved the family to Australia due to the high crime rate in South Africa.

5. Adhir Kalyan

Born in Durban, Kalyan is best known for his role in the US sitcom Rules of Engagement.

The actor first moved to London to further his acting career and later moved across the Atlantic to hit Hollywood.

Interesting fact: Kalyan is the son of South African politician, Sandy Kalyan who is the Democratic Alliance shadow Deputy Minister for International Relations and Cooperation.

More South African stars

Then there are the stars whom we claim as South African, for various reasons.

For example, Matilda actres Embeth Davidtz moved to South Africa when she was nine years old.

Madeleine Petsch, best known for her role in Riverdale as Cheryl Blossom, spent her first 10 years between South Africa and Washington with her parents.

Then, actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw and singer Doja Cat both have South African fathers.
We know, all this talk may make you want to relocate either to Australia or the US just so that your name could too be on this list!

In the meantime, let us celebrate all these talented South Africans.
