WWE is set to bring ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ to this year’s Backlash pay-per-view.

The Viper Randy Orton and the Rated-R Superstar Edge will battle it out at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, on Monday morning (02:30 SAST 15 June).

The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever

The combatants who are both former WWE, World Heavyweight and Intercontinental champions will prove who has the more lethal signature move.

The match had its genesis on an episode of Raw, where Orton challenged Edge to a true test of skills which the Edge accepted.

This will be the fifteenth Backlash since its start in 1999. The Backlash card consists of the main event; championship matches and various other matches.

For Edge and Orton it all began at WrestleMania 36, where the two men viciously fought throughout the WWE Performance Center, pushing past the limits of most mortal competitors until Edge won the match.

Orton admitted that the better man won that night but with one major caveat: that, the better superstar didn’t.

Orton then laid down a challenge he coined ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’, but Raw went off the air before Edge could respond.

On 11 May, The Rated R-Superstar was forced to accept the proposal and was ready to make history with a win.

In the past, Orton, who is a four-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Edge who is a four-time WWE Champion, have battled together, forming a tag team they called Rated-RKO.

The partnership started as a way to take on the reformed D-Generation X, consisting of legends Shawn Michaels and Triple H.

Rated-RKO felt that the two were preventing them from becoming world champions. In July 2006, the team succeeded in becoming World Tag Team Champions by beating Ric Flair and Roddy Piper, but lost the title in January 2007 causing tension between the two. Their alliance finally ended after four months.

Their relationship was further strained when they both qualified for the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23, which meant that the winner would get a championship match. Edge tried, by all means, to sabotage Orton by getting higher powers to put Orton in matches where he would not win. The pair would later reunite that same year and tag together until 2011.

This match will prove if The Viper’s RKO move is more lethal or if ‘The Rated-R Superstar’s’ Spear is actually better.

Edge retired in 2011 after sustaining a seemingly career-ending injury but returned at the 2020 Royal Rumble making a surprise entrance, where he was set on forming Rated-RKO again. Him and Orton tag teamed together in the Royal Rumble match and even hinted at a reunion at the next Raw only for Orton to attack Edge.

Some key match-ups at Backlash will include:

  • Edge vs Randy Orton – The Greatest Wrestling Match
  • Drew McIntyre (c) vs Bobby Lashley – WWE Championship Match
  • Braun Strowman (c) vs The Miz and John Morrison – Universal Championship Handicap Match
  • Asuka (c) vs Nia Jax – Raw Women’s Championship Match

Build up to Backlash

Backlash will air live on SuperSport 4 or DSTV WWE channel 128 on Monday morning 15 June.
