Poem of the day: Africa is in my heartbeat

Africa is in my heartbeat, in every artery and vein. A local poet writes: “Wake up Africa it is time for a new start!”

AFRICA IS IN MY HEARTBEAT BY ZAHIDA WAHAB

Africa is in my heartbeat, in every artery and vein.
It’s sounds reverberate through me even when I’m in distress and pain.

Africa, I give you glory and endless praise.
To your natural beauty I my voice do raise.

To sing about your splendid mountains and your endless blue seas.
Your temperate weather and wildlife roaming proudly, so free.

Africa your beauty knows no bounds.
My song may not be the most mellifluous sound,
but I sing from my heart!

A heart filled with pride,
But wait . . .

Africa you need not be so complacent for,
Your history and legacy is in peril, there lurks an evil akin to a devil . . .
There are many amongst us,
who take more than they need.
Not out of necessity but of sheer greed!

There are many amongst us who are corrupt and full of lies!
Who are the reason for many mother’s distraught cries.

Our women are being murdered
Our children lay dead.
Africa is in mourning,
Blood is continuously shed.

Wake up Africa before it is too late
Poverty and crime, social injustice and hate,
Have become all the norm.
To which many now conform . . .

So I sing my song albeit with a heavy heart.
Wake up, Africa!
It is time once again for a new start.
