It’s bad news for workers and local vehicle manufacturing as Nissan SA Rosslyn retrenchments loom. Just two years ago the Nissan Navara was added to the local production line at Nissan SA’s Rosslyn plant in Pretoria. The line-off ceremony was even attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa (pictured).

Now, media reports confirm that Nissan SA Rosslyn retrenchments are unavoidable as the half-ton NP200 bakkie ceases production in 2024. While the new Nissan Navara will continue, there is nothing to replace the smaller vehicle and that means inevitable restructuring.

It’s too early to say how many workers will be affected but it is estimated hundreds of employees will be retrenched. Nissan SA has “entered a formal consultation phase to restructure the business, which could result in a reduction of the number of employees across the company,” it said in a statement on Monday.

Nissan made it official last month that it would halt production of the popular Nissan NP200 at the end of Q1 2024. There is, as yet, no model to replace the NP200 bakkie because a platform initially earmarked for the task hails from war-sanctioned Russia.

“The geopolitical situation in Russia means this model is no longer viable due to significantly reduced volumes. Until our future plans are confirmed, the business will be operating at reduced production volumes and needs to act responsibly to maintain its long-term competitiveness and be ready to secure future opportunities,” said the Nissan SA statement.

As for the impending Nissan SA Rosslyn retrenchments, the firm says it cannot pre-empt the result of the consultation process. 1 600 are currently employed and around 400 staff could be affected.
