In Athol Fugard’s ‘Statements after an Arrest under the Immorality Act’ an illicit relationship between a white woman and black man in 1960s South Africa self-destructs during the course of the play as it is destroyed by the apartheid system. But why do they have to train British actors to speak with South African accents rather than give South African actors the chance to perform in a production like this in London?
Nicky Schrire performed in the Songsuite Vocal Festival 2014 at the Pheasantry on 28Â June. Nicky holds her own as a contemporary jazz singer, veering between a Norah Jones and Esperanza Spalding sound, yet bringing us a South African flavour as someone passionate about the music of other cultures.
