With final matric results out, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s(UKZN) Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, has the tough task of selecting its final 250 first year students for the MBChB programme. That number however is a drop in the ocean compared to the more than 12 000 first year applications it received. Similarly, according to the IOL, the institution has received 160 059 first year applications but despite the huge demand, it is only able to offer around 9000 first year places across all its programmes.
