After weeks of searching, Gauteng residents have been left with rather expensive egg on their face as the much loved chicken byproduct returns to supermarket shelves at almost double the price. Earlier earlier this year, the poultry industry warned of the impending shortage of chickens and eggs as the industry battles an avian flu outbreak. This particular strain is said to be a quick spreading and has already affects farmers mainly in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West. This week social media users were shocked by the new price of eggs. Viral pictures taken from a Superspar in Midrand shows a price of 30 large eggs selling for R129,99 while 60 eggs sell for R239,99. However just two months ago, 30 eggs were being priced at around R70.
