Students from the University of Pretoria took to the streets on Wednesday to demonstrate against the recent plight of defunding by NSFAS, that has seen many students unable to resume their studies. The students, who were accompanied by students of various other institutions across the country, including North West University (NWU), Sefako Makgatho Health University (SMU) and Fort Hare University, marched to the Union Buildings to hand over a Memorandum of demands. This follows what many students have described as the unfair defunding by NSFAS as well as the new direct payment system of which they’re paid their allowances. The new system sees all beneficiaries having to make use of a NSFAS bank card to receive their allowances and make transactions, as well as make use of the online system to track their balances.
