Police Minister Bheki Cele has admitted that there is an extreme shortage of police, with over 20 000 less policemen since 2020. Taking the ratio of citizens to police to 363 people to one policeman. Cele was speaking at the opening of Chatty Police Station in Gqeberha on Friday. Cele has called on the SAPS to continue to fast track accessibility to policing services for all South Africans & those who live within the country’s borders. Healso urged the community to work closely with police by becoming part of the relevant policing-community structures to assist police in addressing crime. Speaking in Gqeberha, Cele says access to a police station should not be a priviledge and has also allocated a budget for community policing forums.
