SUMMARY:

The death toll in the shootout between members of the South African Police Service and a group of suspected cash-in-transit heist suspects has risen to nine. Three other suspects are hospitalised under police guard. As previously reported, the shootout took place in Sebokeng, Sedibeng, Gauteng, on Thursday, 6 April.

“Members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) were following up on crime intelligence-driven information relating to suspects who were on their way to commit a CIT robbery this morning after 6:00,” said National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. The suspected cash-in-transit heist suspects were traced to an address in Sebokeng, which is where the gun battle broke out. The explosives were reportedly already assembled and ready to be detonated.
