For Good states that “A child goes missing every five hours in South Africa, according to figures released by the South African Police Service Missing Persons Bureau. This adds up to a total of 1 697 children”. Kidnapping is one of the biggest contributors of crime in South Africa. Reasons including financial gain, sexual purposes, power, and sometimes emotional deprivation/mental illnesses. On Wednesday, a woman convicted of kidnapping a newborn baby 22 years ago was sentenced to 5 years in prison at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court. According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa, the convicted woman, whose identity has been protected, will only be eligible for parole after serving 10 months in prison.
