The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) which represents some workers employed by Bombela Operating Company which operates the Gautrain says the company should do away with the fare evasion policy which will require workers pay from their pockets when travelling to and from work using the train. NUMSA which negotiated a new wage agreement with Gautrain management has been issued with a strike certificate and on 28 June the union will be balloting its members in preparation for the strike. According to the union, this benefit has been in place since 2013 and workers were allowed to utilise the train without paying. The company also wants to abolish the housing allowance which enables workers to access housing.
