Eskom continues to stretch its record for most days with the lights on in South Africa this year. Don’t get us wrong, we’re over the moon about it. But we should also reflect on the fact that celebrating 15 days without load-shedding in the most powerful economy in Africa is troublesome. Just in time for the festive season holidays, on Thursday 14 December 2023, Eskom said improvements to generation capacity and a de-escalation in power usage meant it would suspend load-shedding indefinitely. That was 15 days ago. Now, the question must be, how long can the unbroken steak of 2023 last? If Eskom hopes to make it to New Year’s Eve on Sunday 31 January 2023 for a record of 18 days with the lights on in South Africa, it’s got some challenges.
