The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the appointment of Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka as Public Protector is a reward for absolving President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the Phala Phala farm scandal. On Thursday, 19 October, the National Assembly voted in favour of Gcaleka to be appointed as the next Public Protector. A total of 244 MPs voted in favour of Gcaleka while 12 voted against. The ANC, GOOD, IFP, NFP and Al Jama-ah voted in favour of Gcaleka. The DA and EFF were not present during the voting session. The Red Berets have been vocal about the Phala Phala farm scandal and also rejected Gcaleka’s final report following an investigation by the Office of the Public Protector.
