Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, north of Durban has had to cancel some surgeries to the lack of water in the hospital. Phoenix is amongst several areas which include Verulam,oThongathi and Umhlanga, has been hit with water shortages. According to humanitarian NGO Gift of the Givers, the hospitals water problems is due to damaged main supply piping structures, resulting in a severe water shortage. The City says, rapid urbanisation, leaks due to vandalism and ageing infrastructure are largely to blame for the ongoing water challenges in the city.
