Winding its way up the South East Coast of South Africa, is a series of rolling hills, indigenous forests, lagoons, lakes, soft sandy beaches and mountain ranges.

It comes as no surprise that the Garden Route has been named in the Telegraph’s 10 best walking tours for 2016.

The publication featured the new “Trails of the Garden Route” tour in its top ten along with walking and hiking tours in France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Greece and Costa Rica.

The 16-day tour takes in “some of the best coastal trails, forest and gorges in South Africa”. It includes a hike up Table Mountain, a walk along the Alexandria Trail and a day game drive in Addo Elephant National Park.

The tour pitstops in Stellenbosch and Franschoek for a spot of wine tasting. Another highlight on the trip includes a walk along the Whale Trail, which offers tourists the chance to spot Southern Right whales.

While we wholeheartedly agree with the Telegraph’s choice, there is a whole lot more that South Africa has to offer. Here are our Top ten spots that should be on your South African bucket list.
