Come rain, shine or snow, Metsi Matso is the place to go. You’ll have to forgive for opening in verse, but this new luxury lodge at the heart of the Drakensberg mountain range is enough to move anyone to poetry.
Located in the far-east outpost of QwaQwa in the Free State, this humble-yet-stunning getaway is part of a government project to draw more tourists into rural areas which need economic stimulation. We’ve got a feeling this place will have no trouble “reeling in” the visitors, especially those who enjoy their fishing.
Metsi Matso is an absolute haven for anglers. Sitting serenely on the banks of the
The Ministry of Tourism released the following statement on Monday, outlining their hopes and desires for Metsi Matso. They’re confident that the lodge will provide plenty of employment opportunities for locals:
The department built the Metsi Matso Lodge as part of its National Tourism Sector Strategy to increase tourism products at rural nodes, and to enhance the
visitor experience.”“The lodge, which can provide accommodation for more than 60 people, is one of a number of infrastructure projects under the department’s Working for Tourism initiative – funded by the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). It is envisaged that the facility will create employment opportunities, and stimulate the local tourism economy.”

The Standard Rooms are there to let the scenery do the talking. They may not be the largest you’ll ever stay in, but you’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep in a forgotten South African paradise. If you’re easily pleased, you can settle for a room with a fully-functioning shower and two beds.
The Luxury Rooms are more about what Metsi Matso can offer. You get your own kitchenette, lounge, private patio and DStv access – because, no matter where you are in the world, nothing says home comforts like a bit of television in the background. This is a spacious, sprawling facility that’ll make you feel like moving to the mountains forever.
The thing about this place is it has a year-round versatility. It’s an amazing location to curl up by the fire with a loved one at night or go for a dip in the water on a baking hot summer’s day. Admittedly, the lodge does cater to those who consider themselves active. Given your surroundings, it would be rude not to get out and about.
We find Metsi Matso to be a very “cosy” location. You’re far, far away from the rest of the world and snuggled up in one of the most majestic valleys in Mzansi. Whether you come for a night or a week-long escape, the QwaQwa-based destination has everything you need to help you hit the “reset” button.
