A National Geographic certified retreat in Cederberg

The lodge prides itself in its ecological ethos. This is a holiday in the best of senses: out in the open plains of nature, guests are able to enjoy their detox, far from the city lights.

A perfect place for a ‘Digital Detox’

When people go on vacation, they are afforded the opportunity to escape, unwind and relax. Phones have become part of our daily lives, an extension of oneself, if you will. This is why holiday’s that have the express purpose of giving you a detox (in general, but also of the digital kind) are increasingly on the rise.

The digital detox wish-list is one that induces relaxation; from the room, to the amenities and the activities on offer to the guests.

There are secluded lodges around the world that have made it onto the list of most desired detox retreats. There are a range across the continents, from India to Norway, and Costa Rica to Thailand.

Technically speaking, though, can be just about anywhere. All you need is a sense of serenity, and the self-discipline of switching off: your devices, that is.

Cederberg

The Cederberg region is one which is often overlooked as a holiday goer destination. When people visit the Western Cape, they often stay in and close to the city of Cape Town, or head along the coast on the renowned Garden Route.

However, the Cederberg region dazzles with its mountain ranges, flora and fauna. The environment is completely different to that of other regions, and the land is steeped in history and culture. National Geographic have an itinerary titled Wonders of the Cederberg which is a great guide and starting point to exploring the area.

This is home to sandstone formations of a bygone era and ancient lands, with many of the world’s most famous rock art nearby, dating back more than 10000 years.

Visitors are encouraged to engage in the area’s rich history, aided by expert guides. These include tales of the Bushmen, and tours that take guests to see the unique fynbos-rich landscapes.

While at the lodge, you can of course simply do nothing and just be, but should you wish to be active, there are many options in and around Cederberg. Visit some of the nearby rock pools to swim or fish, or hop in a canoe and head downstream. Those who shy away from water sports will be happy on walking trails, mountain bikes, picnics and stargazing.

Guests can enjoy Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve from a culinary point of view, with culinary weekend booking and epicure special interest packages. Wine tasting is available from the award-winning wine cellar on-site.

Meditation on site is popular, as there is a certain calm that comes with being in the pressence of 500 million year old mountains. Relaxation is easily achieved at the spa, and for those who are in search of a creative pursuit, it can be the ideal writing or painting retreat.
