The design

For the first time in years, iPhone is offering a device in bright and vivid colours, along with the standard black and white. Where older models had stainless steel casing, the XR’s edges are aluminium. It looks modern too.

The display

The 6.1-inch display and the Liquid Retina Display makes the low screen resolution bearable. Despite the resolution, it still measures up and is bright enough to use outdoors too.

The iPhone XR is only a smidge smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. You can reach most of the phone while holding it in one hand, but it might be cumbersome at times.

The camera

The iPhone XR’s camera is everything you need it to be, and the main camera boasts the same lense as the iPhone XS. It’s powerful enough for 4K 60 frames-per-second videos and features Smart HDR options.
Shutterbugs might miss the telephoto lens and zooming in loses some of the photo quality, but that can be rectified by standing closer to the subject. On the plus side, low-light photos come out ‘crisper’ and brighter.
The 7 MP selfie camera’s Portrait mode only works with people, unfortunately. Aim the camera at something else, and the phone will oh so politely tell you that there needs to be a person in the frame.

It doesn’t deplete during the day, despite the phone being used for taking pictures, listening to music, playing games and general internet surfing. The battery drops to between 20 and 40 per cent after approximately 12 hours of use.

While the iPhone XR supports fast-charging, the cable has to be purchased separately. Alternatively, it supports wireless charging too.

It boasts a 3GB RAM instead of 4 GB like most other phones. However, the A12 Bionic chip keeps performance issues at bay and makes it easy to operate.

The iPhone XR doesn’t lag during AR games, even in multiplayer mode. Apps open super fast as well.

The iPhone XR offers excellent value for the price. It looks modern and fun, even though it doesn’t tick all the boxes when it comes to screen resolution and photo-taking. Four out of five stars.
