While the YouTube video doesn’t give much detail, it’s clear from the trailer that PS4 Tournaments: Challenger Series could just be the push PlayStation needs to improve its social engagement.

What we know about PS4 Tournaments

The video is lots of fun to watch without having too many details about how the system will work. However, Sony revealed the games that are part of PS4 Tournaments Challenger Series. They are Battlefield V, Warface, FIFA 20 and Mortal Kombat 11.

According to the official PlayStation announcement, Mortal Kombat 11 will be the first Tournaments: Challenger Series. Sony also said:

“We’re inviting gamers of all skill levels to play and enjoy competitive online gaming from the comfort of their own homes on their PS4 console.”

How will the PS4 Tournaments Challenger Series work?

Mortal Kombat 11 will be followed by FIFA 20, Battlefield V and then Warface; if the order in the announcement is correct. The Mortal Kombat 11 tournament kicks off on 6 August.

Game tournaments will have seasons allowing players to compete in their favourite games season after season.

Each tournament will be made up of 3 stages. For Mortal Kombat 11 each player will need to win 3 out of 4 of their games to proceed to the next stage.

In addition, stage 2 will be a single-elimination round where if the player wins, they will progress to Stage 3 and compete with the best of the best to be crowned champion.

Prizes will be awarded for progression through the tournament stages. According to the statement, they’ll vary from in-game content to in-game currency as well as hard cash.

Furthermore, the tournaments will be available from the Events Tab on the PS4 console. At the moment, it looks like the tournaments feature will be baked into the social system of the PS4.

Up until now, Sony have attempted to promote the PS4 as a social network without creating any real ways of connecting with users.

If these Tournaments are to become an ongoing thing, which it appears it will, it’s easy to see how the games can create a virtual arcade atmosphere; where users begin to meet and interact around competitive titles.
