The day has finally arrived. Sony’s State of Play event will take place today, 24 September 2019, at 22:00 South African Standard Time (or, 13:00 Pacific Time).

Sony will use the event to show off their latest product and games, including new stuff for the PlayStation 4, as well as the PS VR and new information about The Last of Us II.

The Naughty Dog studio has already released several teasers for the game’s State Of Play media event. We could possibly be getting a new trailer; and if we cross all our fingers and toes, maybe even an official release date.

Anything else is open to speculation at this point; Sony did an excellent job of keeping leaks and rumours under wraps for this year’s State of Play event.

“We’re preparing a pretty hefty show, weighing in at around 20 minutes and sporting a fresh new look. And we’ll have some great news to share with you, including new game reveals, new content from PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, and a host of other updates. Should be fun!”

Details about Sony’s State of Play are scarce at the best of times, and Sony really knows how to keep a secret. At best, we have rumours and speculation to go on.

Don’t forget to check back; we will update this article as new information about when the broadcast will be, and about what to expect. This is what we know to date.

What is Sony’s State of Play?

Sony hosts its State of Play events as a way to reveal information about their upcoming games releases. This way, Sony can push releases out on their own time, without having to wait for gaming expos.

Fans were up in arms when Sony didn’t attend E3 earlier this year. Looking back, it was a clever marketing strategy to keep gamers excited about what is to come.

In addition, by hosting their own event, Sony takes charge of exactly how to release the new information, and when to release it. Doing things on one’s own terms is all the rage this year.

When will Sony’s State of Play take place?

Rumour has it that Sony’s State of Play is scheduled for sometime between late September and November 2019, although an exact date is not known.

A September date would coincide with Outbreak Day’s release, while a November date would coincide with the release of PS4 exclusive, Death Stranding.

Both are viable options for dates, so it’s hard to speculate. The last State of Play took place in May; at the time releasing the Final Fantasy 7 remake trailer.

Upcoming releases

Three games in particular are being considered the “most important” for the event – Death Stranding, Star Wars Jedi, and Last of Us 2. With Death Stranding, players will hopefully get a look at new trailers of the long-awaited game.

Star Wars Jedi has also been slated for a November release and will surely be a highlight during the upcoming State of Play. However, Star Wars pales in comparison to the upcoming Last of Us 2.

We still have a long wait for its release – said to be coming our way in May 2020 – which will also be available on the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 (PS5.)

In addition to the marketing push, PlayStation is supposedly also planning two big events leading up to the launch of the next generation of console as well.

In February, PlayStation is allegedly set to hold a PlayStation Meeting where they will finally announce the PlayStation 5.
