The game is still in development, but Red Barrels have released a trailer and some details about the Outlast series.

“Set in the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control.

In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit. Survive alongside friends or dare to face the experiments by yourself. Your freedom ends in 2021 in The Outlast Trials.”

WHEN WILL OUTLAST BE RELEASED?

Outlast 3 was announced in December 2017, though no time frame or target platforms were confirmed. During this announcement, Red Barrels said that because they could not easily add downloadable content for Outlast 2 due to its structure, they have a smaller separate project related to Outlast that will be released before Outlast 3.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

The Outlast Trials was teased in October 2019 and whilst it will not be a direct sequel to the other Outlast titles in the series, this new game will be set in the same thrilling universe: more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era and will be about test subjects in a mysterious Cold War experiment. Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf said the proof-of-concept was now complete and the game’s team was now in development mode.

The Outlast Trials will allow you to face the horrors of the trials by yourself or cooperate with up to three other test subjects.

“Our team is hard at work creating a new experience that will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players, whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends,” the creators said.

Red Barrels also stated that The Outlast Trials is still in the early stages of production and the production process is ramping up and gaining pace.

As their co-founder, David puts it: “Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time focus on content creation, variety… and gore.”

With multiplayer aspects in survival horror games becoming more common, it is no surprise that the Red Barrels team have decided to get in on the act. Honestly, I get the feeling that this multiplayer mode just might make Outlast even scarier.
