Imagine a world where you do not need to throw tantrums, insults or hoot insanely at the car with its driver that cut you off.

With Autonomous vehicles, your car will just send a binary message 10111010000 to the offending vehicle, and other vehicles on the road.

After that the incident is recorded and will not be repeated by other cars, that world is part of the autonomous vehicle revolution.

We are still years away until autonomous cars are commercially available and even then the human driver still needs to be alert in case the car has sensory or technical problems.

How do self-driving cars work?

To determine their accurate location and navigate, autonomous vehicles use laser-based radar systems known as LIDAR.

LIDAR short for Light Detection And Ranging functions with GPS and inertial measurement unit sensors (IMU) to pinpoint the car’s location down to a quarter of an inch.

An additional radar control kicks in whenever an obstacle comes close to the car. These sensors keep the car running and the driver with the passengers safe.

The autonomous vehicle uses deep learning technology to review cameras and GPS data to calculate the fastest route. Special algorithms always run between the computerised parts in and around the vehicle’s engine.

The vehicle also calculates the probability of actions to be taken by other drivers and the change of natural occurrences as the vehicle drives down the road.

How safe are self-driving vehicles?

The burning question amongst many of us is, how safe are these vehicles? Well, most of the futuristic technology inside these vehicles is already in some vehicles on the road today.

Technologies such as lane detection, forward collision avoidance, mounted rear cameras come standard with modern vehicles. Next move for car manufacturers is a communication system between vehicles.

The transportation industry is to be the most affected by autonomous vehicles; businesses are expecting cheaper labour costs and cheaper goods delivered to consumers, it is estimated that truck drivers salary accounts for about a 3rd of transport costs.

Taxi fares will also go down, and commuters will be guaranteed safer road trips as autonomous vehicles cut out the middle man which is the taxi driver, who needs to get paid and sometimes has a temper.

But then we need to retrain the people who lose their jobs to machines, can we retrain a 52-year-old truck driver with IT skills?

  • Car insurance might be extinct or if it survives this revolution car insurance will be paid by the car manufacturer and not the driver.
  • The elderly and disabled will benefit enormously from self-driving cars as they usually have to use public transportation, now they will have a very safe car at their disposal.
  • Law enforcement will be freed up and focus on serious crimes rather than drunk and reckless drivers.

  • Hacking, what happens if attackers gain access into the manufacturer’s network?
  • What about malware attacks
  • Who owns the vehicles, can we still purchase vehicles or do we need to lease them from the manufacturers?
