World Cup 2018: Sweden, Mexico

They say sport brings people together, but it’s rare to see opposing fans both singing in celebration just minutes after the result on the day did not go one side’s way.

In the case of Mexico, their fans every reason to be jumping around in the streets of Ekaterinburg, despite their team putting on their worst performance of the 2018 World Cup – crashing to a 3-0 defeat to Sweden.

This was thanks to the result in the parallel Group F fixture, where world champions, Germany were stunned by the unfancied South Korea, who ran out 2-0 winners, sending them out of the tournament in the first round.

This meant that both Mexico and Sweden progressed to the round of 16, prompting a rare show of unity from the opposing camps, as they joined one another bidding the pre-tournament favourites goodbye, who continued the trend of defending champions crashing out at the earliest hurdle in the competition.
