Manager Pep Guardiola on Saturday confirmed that his Manchester City side will give new Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour when they meet next week.

“Of course we are going to do it,” said Guardiola. “We are going to do the guard of honour of course.

“Always we receive Liverpool when they come to our house in an incredible way. They cannot complain and of course we are going to do it because they deserve it.”

Liverpool have also planned to have a victory parade at some point in the near future but after the mass gatherings sparked by the ending of the 30-year wait for the title, those plans will need approval from city authorities.

What isn’t in doubt is how phenomenal Jurgen Klopp’s team have been in sprinting to the title.

Though there was so much more to winning the title than goals, the free-scoring nature of Klopp’s team undoubtedly played a part in winning the title with seven matches to spare breaking the previous record of five held jointly by Manchester City and Manchester United.

Goals, goals and more goals for Liverpool

In 31 matches in the Premier League season so far, Liverpool have scored 70 goals. Liverpool sport 17 different goalscorers in their league campaign to date with Mohamed Salah leading the way.

The Egyptian striker Salah has netted 17 in the league this season and is just ahead of the man he shared the golden boot with last tern, Sadio Mane who has 15 goals to his name.

The third member of Liverpool’s customary front-three, Bobby Firmino, has scored eight goals away from Anfield while suffering a curious home drought.

“The front three we know are as good as anything in Europe,” said former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher.

“They don’t miss too many games but when they do there is a massive drop-off and that’s why I feel Liverpool still need to strengthen.”

Further records could yet tumble before the season is out, with Liverpool on course for an all-time high Premier League points tally and the biggest-ever margin of victory.

More to come

Liverpool’s 23-point gap to Manchester City is all the more remarkable given how Guardiola’s men themselves have raised the bar in recent seasons.

The Reds 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace on Wednesday 24 June was a 23rd consecutive Premier League win at home.

Liverpool are in the midst of an incredible purple patch in the Premier League fuelled by their ability to hold onto their best players with most of their stars tied down to long-term deals.
