Mamelodi Sundowns are set to negotiate a new deal with skipper Themba Zwane as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly set to negotiate a new deal with skipper Themba Zwane as media reports suggest in South Africa.

The South African understands that Zwane could be handed a new deal by the reigning DStv Premiership champions, Sundowns – iDiski Times reports.

Zwane is currently in his final season with Sundowns as his contract or deal is set to expire at the end of this season, but because of his influence – he is expected to sign a new deal.

According to the football publication, Zwane’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane confirmed the creative midfielder’s current contract situation at Sundowns.

However, the veteran player agent and ‘Mshishi’s long-time agent handler revealed that he is yet to open the discussions with Sundowns.

“Themba Zwane has an option, so there is no other deal except that he is currently on the second year with an option to renew for next season,” Mahlakgane told iDiski Times.

“There is no other thing that whoever is talking about. The only deal that we currently have is an option for next year.”

In addition, Zwane was a notable absentee in their fifth league match when they defeated Richards Bay on Wednesday afternoon in KwaZulu-Natal.

Based on coach Rulani Mokwena’s recent remarks, he said he is doing everything in his power to protect Zwane considering his age as a 34-year-old.

“Because he has an option, so only when the club accepts the option, that would be the contract, and that will be when we are getting involved in engaging the club,” added the agent.

“Currently, he is on contract running plus with an option to renew.”     

After joining Sundowns from Vardos FC in 2011, the Tembisa-born star was loaned out to the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces in the 2013/14 campaign where he played under the late Bafana Bafana legend Clive Barker.

At Chloorkop, Zwane has lifted the league title on seven occasions, he boasts three Nedbank, two Telkom Knockout, one MTN8, and the lucrative CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cups.
