The weekend past was another busy one in sport with plenty of action both in South Africa and further afield in this weekend sports review we give you a rundown of all the happenings.

Weekend Sports review – Friday

There was Currie Cup round three action on Friday with the Bulls ending their winless streak against the luckless Pumas. The Bulls fought back to win 25-17.

Tatjana Schoenmaker made history in becoming the first South African woman to reach the podium at a long course Swimming World Championship. She earned silver in the 200m breaststroke behind Russian Yuliya Efimova.

World governing body Fifa banned Abu Bakarr Kabba, a former administrative secretary in the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), for five years and handed down a fine of just over R700 000.

In the Tour de France there was No Stage 19 winner as a hail storm forced abandonment of the stage.

In CHAN qualifying Botswana held Zambia to a draw and there were wins for Namibia and Ethiopia over Comoros and Djibouti respectively.

Saturday

The Springboks earned a last gasp 16-16 draw with the All Blacks in Wellington to stay on course for a first-ever Rugby Championship title (The Boks twice won the Tri-Nations but have never claimed the four-team tournament). Australia beat Argentina 16-10 in the weekend’s other match.

Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs by 2-0 in the Carling Black Label Cup played in front of a sold-out FNB stadium.

Chad le Clos was left satisfied after he won South Africa’s third medal at the Swimming World Championships bagging the bronze in the 100m butterfly in Gwangju.

Free State made a huge Currie Cup statement with 68-14 victory that marked their second bonus-point win in as many weeks and ensured that they remained one of only two unbeaten teams. The other unbeaten outfit is the Golden Lions, who pipped Western Province 30-28 in an epic clash in Cape Town.

South Africa’s Gideon Buthelezi produced one of the best performance of his career when he smashed Adrian Jimenez from Mexico to defeat after just 75 seconds in the first round, to retain his IBO junior-bantamweight belt for the fifth time, at the International Convention Centre in East London over the weekend.

In Chan qualifying Uganda, Mali and Burundi all won while Cape Verde and Mauritania played out a draw.

Egan Bernal all but clinched victory in the Tour de France on Saturday defending his overnight lead in the penultimate stage to leave the Colombian only needing to cross the finish line on Sunday’s parade into Paris to win the 2019 edition.

Sunday

Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola and Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich had commanding start-to-finish victories of the Media Maratón de Bogotá, an IAAF Gold Label road race, in Bogata, Colombia.

Kenyan-born Bahraini Eunice Chumba and her former countryman Robert Kipkemboi bettered the course records at the Liupanshui Summer International Marathon in Guizhou, China.

Iin Chan qualifying Bafana Bafana suffer a shock 3-2 loss to Lesotho.

Max Verstappen won a chaotic German Grand Prix at Hockenheim that saw plenty of incidents.

In a one-sided fight, South Africa’s Lodumo Lamati won the vacant IBF International junior-featherweight title after Filipino Richie Mepranum quit at the end of the 10th round at the Orient Theatre in East London.
