Bafana star shows his class after scoring in France

Bafana star Lebo Mothiba scored then showed his class at the end of his French club’s match over the weekend.

Bafana forward Lebo Mothiba celebrated in style after scoring for his French Ligue 1 side, Strasbourg, on October 29 2023. The recalled Bafana player Mothiba came off the bench to rescue a point for Strasbourg in a 1-1 draw with hosts Rennes.

The towering striker had replaced Dilane Bakwa in the 58th minute before grabbing the leveler with nine minutes remaining on the clock.

How Bafana player showed his class

As the Strasbourg players walked off the pitch, Mothiba showed his class. He went out of his way to acknowledge the support of the visiting fans. The Bafana player then went ahead to jump the perimeter fence and reach out to a fan who had asked for his jersey. The 27-year-old South African granted the supporter his wish by giving him the jersey before walking back to the pitch.

During the game, Mothiba scored when he reacted the fastest to slam in a rebound at Roazhon Park. Kev’s powerful shot had forced Rennais goalkeeper to punch it onto the path of the towering South African player.

“An equaliser that feels good! Lebo Mothiba on the lookout for Kev’s heavy strike,” Strasbourg wrote on their Facebook page

Mothiba in line for an award

Mothiba has since been nominated for Strasbourg Fans Man-of-the-Match Award. Supporters for the club will vote online to decide the winner this week, according to a statement from the team.

“After a good point at Roazhon Park, it’s time to vote for your Man of the Match. In your opinion, who was the best Strasbourg player in the match against Rennes?” the club wrote.

Mothiba, who has three league goals this season, stands a good chance to win the accolade. This is the case considering his impact in the few minutes he played.

Who else has earned nomination?

He has been nominated for the club award alongside Strasbourg team-mates Matz Salts, Marvin Senaya, Gerzino Nyamsi, Lucas Perrin, Thomas Delaine, Junior Mwanga, Ismaël Doukouré, Moses Sahi Dion, Bakwa, Angelo Gabriel, Emanuel Emegha.

Other substitutes Kevin Gameiro who entered the field alongside Mothiba has also been shortlisted for the award. Other nominees are Frédéric Guilbert, Jessy Deminguet and Eduard Sobol.

Overall, the result saw Strasbourg remain eighth, slightly above the drop zone with 11 points from 10 games. Lyon anchor the 18-member log table with just three points from nine matches. On the opposite end of the table, Nice sit pretty top with 22 points from 10 games.
