South Africa’s lone entrant in the men’s singles draw at the 2023 US Open in New York, Lloyd Harris, will face Spanish top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.

Can the 26-year-old Capetonian upset his more illustrious opponent in what will be the first meeting at ATP Tour level between the pair?

According to the US Open website, the match will form part of Thursday’s night session and won’t start before 01:00 (SA time) on Friday morning.

Carlos Alcaraz launched the defence of his US Open title with a brisk victory after his opponent suffered an injury on Tuesday.

Alcaraz, returning to the same Arthur Ashe Stadium court where he lifted his first Grand Slam as a teenager a year ago, was always in control after Germany’s Dominik Koepfer rolled his left ankle badly in the opening game.

Koepfer tried to continue despite being in obvious discomfort, but finally called it quits while trailing 3-2 in the second set after dropping the first 6-2.

Meanwhile, Harris, the world No 177, cruised past Argentina’s Guido Pella in straight sets in his opening round match, winning with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-4 scoreline in two hours and six minutes.
