World No 3 Elena Rybakina is set to defend her Wimbledon championship, bringing her distinct combination of fearsome skill and charm to the grass court. 

Rybakina’s love of the game has helped her stand out in a world of intense competition, attracting global attention to the women’s tennis scene. 

Elena Rybakina is redefining the sport

Rybakina’s journey to the top has been nothing short of remarkable. Earlier this year, she reached the finals of the Australian Open, further establishing her status in the sport. 

Despite falling to world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka, Rybakina demonstrated resilience and positivity, affirming her character and mindset.

Perhaps the most defining moment of Rybakina’s career was her stunning victory at Wimbledon in 2022. Considered an underdog, she surprised spectators and critics alike, navigating her way through the finals against world No. 3 Ons Jabeur, clinching her first Grand Slam title.

Rybakina, who returns to Wimbledon this year, moves from dark horse to top contender, sharing the limelight with Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. She remains unfazed by the expectations, focusing on her game, her team, and her love of tennis.

A tight-knit team

Rybakina’s Wimbledon preparation is a collaborative effort. Her parents, older sister Anna, coach Stefano Vukov, a fitness trainer, and a physiotherapist are among her ciiner circle. She values the dynamic with her coach, Stefano Vukov, and his vivacious courtside presence, although some have been critical of his abrasive commands from courtside.

Rybakina’s respect for tennis legend Roger Federer is a significant part of her journey. The eight-time Wimbledon champion is an inspiration for Rybakina. 

“Roger is my idol,” Rybakina admits. “I admire his style, his graceful movements, and the lightness he brings to the court.”

As Rybakina prepares to defend her Wimbledon championship, her personality and love of the game make her a fan favorite. Her attitude to the game serves as a reminder that it is the joy and passion obtained poured into the sport that truly matters.

This year, Rybakina is no longer the underdog, but she takes it in stride. 

“It’s not that easy to come back as a champion,” she said. 

Rather than being deterred, she is more focused than ever. 

“But I want more than the memories. I want it again”.
