Soweto Marathon 2023 set to inspire with 50,000 participants

The Soweto Marathon, also known as the ‘The People’s Race’ is back on track and set to take place on 5 November 2023.

After overcoming some hurdles that put the marathon in doubt, it is now all systems go for the event, with entries now open.

Soweto marathon co-founder, Thulani Sibisi (70), who lives in Soweto, Gauteng, said the marathon is much more than just a race.

“When we grew up during apartheid, we never had races or marathons in townships, we only relied on school races … We thought that it would be very good for townships to have their own races,” he explained.

Soweto, was the perfect host for the marathon because of its historical significance, he added.

The first Soweto Marathon took place in 1991. Last year about 20 000 people took part.  “It was a great success compared to the many races that experienced a decrease in participants because of the COVID-19 [pandemic],” said Sibisi.

A lack of resources after the pandemic threatened the marathon’s success but support from the Gauteng government and African Bank has put the event back on track.

50 000 participants

This year’s marathon is expected to attract 50 000 participants who have the option of a 10km road race, a half marathon (21km) or the marathon (42km).

Participants will run past Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Walter Sisulu Square, Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, Morris Isaacson High School, June 16 Memorial Acre, Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.

The race starts and finishes at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.
