South Africa finish without a medal at World Athletics Championships

The 2023 World Athletics Championships proved forgettable for Team South Africa who finished the eight-day competition without a medal.

In total, 50 events were contested with 46 counties of the 203 competing nations winning at least one bronze medal.

South Africa sent a 36-strong team to Budapest in Hungary, comprising 24 men and 12 women.

The last time South Africa won a medal at a World Championship was in 2017 in London when the country claimed as many as six.

There were some hard luck stories, including Akani Simbine’s disqualification for a false start in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m and the South African men’s 4x100m relay team which reached the final, but then dropped the baton.

RESULT | Wayde van Niekerk misses 400m medal

Great things were expected from world record holder Wayde van Niekerk in the 400m, but he ran out of puff and finished last in the final, although he was upgraded to seventh following a post-race disqualification.

Prudence Sekgodiso may have had reason to feel aggrieved in her 800m semi-final where a stumble left her out of contention, but it’s unlikely she would’ve featured among the medals in the final.

The next World Championships are due to be held in 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
