South African winger Percy Tau is on the cusp of finishing the year with more silverware for Al Ahly. The Bafana Bafana forward helped Al Ahly edge out Ceramica Cleopatra FC 1-0 on Christmas Day. Justice Arthur’s injury-time own goal was all Al Ahly needed to qualify for the Egyptian Super Cup final.

Just how close did Tau come to scoring in the Egyptian Super Cup?

The semifinal match took place at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. Tau came close to scoring after firing a close-range shot, but Cleopatra keeper Mohamed produced a double save to deny the former Brighton and Hove player in the first-half.

Can Tau and company add the Egyptian Super Cup to their trophy collection?

With the Egyptian Super Cup loading, Tau’s Al Ahly stand a chance to add to their Fifa Club World Cup bronze medal.  The CAF Champions League holders won the bronze in Saudi Arabia on Friday after beating Urawa Reds of Japan 4-2 in Saudi Arabia. It was the first Fifa World Cup bronze medal for Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller. The Swiss mentor is now one bronze away from matching South African coach Pitso Mosimane’s double.

Where do Al Ahly stand on Egyptian Super Cup records?

Under Mosimane, Al Ahly secured back-to-back bronze medals. The Cairo-based giants are the Egyptian Super Cup champions. The Reds of Cairo defeated Pyramids 1-0 last season to win the cup. This season, Pyramids, featuring Bafana Bafana striker Fagrie Lakay as a second-half substitute, crashed out of the Egyptian Super Cup. Pyramids lost 1-0 to Modern Future FC on December 25 2023.

Now, Modern Future will date the fancied Al Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup final on December 28 2023, with the scales tipped in favour of Tau’s employers. Koller’s team holds the record for the most 13 Egyptian Super cups. The winner of the super cup is assured of a trophy and an equivalent of R4.6m ($250,000) in prize money. Al Ahly can even win more silverware this season, as they are on course to defend their Egyptian Premier League title. The Reds are also inevitable favourites for the CAF Champions League title retention. Last month, Al Ahly missed out on the inaugural African Football League (AFL) championship after losing to Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinal. The DStv Premiership kings went on to win the AFL crown after defeating Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate over two-legged finals.
