Al Ahly striker Percy Tau is set to take a salary cut should he continue playing for the Egyptian giants.

According to Cairo24, the the Red Devils have suggested that Tau take a 50% salary cut to continue with the club, or alternatively, be loaned. The 30-year-old Bafana Bafana star has hardly featured this season for the Egyptian giants despite earning his third CAF Champions League title.

Percy Tau joined Al Ahly in 2021 and has gone on to play over 100 games for the club scoring 25 times. Despite his success in Egypt, some feel the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward has failed to live up to the hype. Former Ahly star Ahmed Abou Moslem believes the star has failed to deliver in recent months.

“Percy Tau has not performed as expected for Al Ahly since his return from the South African national team’s camp for the last African Nations Championship and there’s a state of tension between him and Swiss coach Marcel Koller, the team’s coach, and the relationship between them has reached a dead end,”  he said as per Kick-Off.

Al Ahly to cut Percy Tau’s salary in half?

Tau has also struggled with Bafana Bafana, and was heavily bashed for his lacklustre performance against Nigeria. Bafana coach Hugo Broos has since defended his top player.

“The only thing that is important, and I hope he feels that, is he has all my confidence. That’s most important because it’s not easy when they kill you on social media,” Broos said.

“It’s the worst thing in the world to say what you want about somebody. This is disgusting sometimes. I hope that’s what he feels from the group and the technical staff and I hope it will be enough for Percy,” he said.

Earlier in the year, it was revealed that Al Ahly’s rivals Zamalek were interested in Percy Tau. Money-wise, the move makes sense but given Tau’s passion to play in the Club World Cup, it might not happen.

Tau is no longer roaring as club cuts salary

It remains to be seen if the Lion of Judah can rediscover form for club and country. The saga between Al Ahly and Percy Tau is far from over.
