Safa call emergency meeting on Sunday after CEO quits

The South African Football Association (Safa) will have an emergency meeting on Sunday to consider the resignation of CEO Tebogo Motlanthe.

The South African Football Association (Safa) will have an emergency meeting on Sunday to consider the resignation of CEO Tebogo Motlanthe.

Safa call emergency meeting 

The organization stated on Saturday that it had received Motlanthe’s letter of resignation. Other developments at Safa House, it claimed, will be covered during the meeting on Sunday.

“Safa remains focused on South Africa’s bid for the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup and will also finalise discussions around all of the regulatory requirements needed to pursue the global event,” the association said in a statement. 

“Banyana Banyana’s road to the Fifa Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July will also be discussed, as well as the appointment of an acting Safa CEO.

“The relationship between Safa and advocate Motlanthe remains cordial and there is no animosity between the two parties.”

The message also stated that Safa president Dr Danny Jordaan and Motlanthe will meet on Saturday night to discuss the subject further, and that the specifics of their conversation would be published in a press release following the emergency meeting on Sunday. 

Two weeks ago, Safa conducted an indaba, which its special member, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), opted to boycott at the last minute for as yet unknown reasons.

The PSL stated that it will seek a meeting with Minister of Art, Sport, and Culture Zizi Kodwa as well as Caf President Patrice Motsepe.

Safa requested the PSL to address club licensing and coach credentials, particularly for those coaching teams in the top league and national first division, where they demand on at least Caf A and B licenses.
